Check out the details below.

YouTuber turns old Mi 9 smartphone into gaming console

A YouTuber named Geekerwan recently showcased a unique DIY project on his official YouTube channel, in which he turned an old Mi 9 smartphone into a hardcore gaming device. The Youtuber mentioned that the entire project cost him around $150 (~Rs 11,479), including the $110 (~Rs 8,419) price tag for the second-hand Mi 9.

Now, coming to the actual project, to turn the traditional retail unit of the Mi 9 into a gaming beast, Geekerwan created some notable changes As for the internal components including Snapdragon 855 processor, 3,300mAh battery and thermal system. First, he Tripled the battery of the Mi 9 by adding two additional 3,300mAh battery units As for the existing battery pack, taking the total battery capacity of the device to 9,900mAh.

Secondly, Geekarwan made Some Important Changes in Snapdragon 855 Chipset To improve the clock speed of prime CPU cores. He used a kernel management app to keep the CPU clock speed at its maximum at all times. Similarly, YouTuber too GPU frequency increased from 585MHz to 840MHz To improve GPU performance. interesting, He was also able to increase the screen refresh rate of the Mi 9 to 75Hz For a smooth gaming experience.

The performance of Mi 9 has improved a lot after the above changes. Geekerwan said that the modified Mi 9 was able to achieve a score of 1207 on the 3DMark Wildlife Extreme benchmark test, which is a 40% increase compared to the traditional SD 855’s score.

In fact, the YouTuber mentioned that with the above changes, the Mi 9 was able to deliver a smoother gaming performance than the latest Xiaomi 12 Pro that comes with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. Modified Mi 9 delivers 50FPS for Genshin Impact And also consumes less power than Xiaomi 12 Pro.

Now, all these performance boosts and tweaks usually lead to device overheating due to lack of proper thermal system. To solve that problem, Gekkerwan removed the device’s camera module to make room for a dedicated cooling fan (because who needs a camera on a gaming device?). So that it can be kept cool while gaming.

Also, to cover the modified back of the device, the YouTuber enlisted the help of a 3D printing company and added a custom-designed back panel to the Mi 9, with dedicated cutouts for the fan and proper airflow. They also added a custom mount on top of the 3D printed back panel to connect the Gaming Mi 9 smartphone to the controller or any other supported accessory, for that matter.
