With carrie, director Brian De Palma has the distinction of making the first ever adaptation of Stephen King, and quite possibly the best. Bringing King’s debut novel to life, De Palma tells the story of outcast teenager Carrie White (Sissy Spacek), whose telekinetic powers make her a danger to everyone around her. De Palma captures the casual cruelty of Carrie’s classmates, and Spacek makes Carrie both likeable and terrifying. It culminates in an intense, brutal finale that is a marvel of depth and tension.

child’s play

Killer doll Chucky’s journey to becoming a horror icon began with her first appearance in child’s play. Chucky, voiced by Brad Dourif, wasn’t quite the scathing superstar he later became, but director Tom Holland and franchise creator Don Mancini are making the most of his limited screen time. A serial killer’s doll is really scary as he terrorizes 8-year-old Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent), especially since no one Andy believes his harmless-looking doll is out to kill him.

scary show 2

Although it’s not the horror classic of the first scary show, scary show 2 is a solid sequel to the anthology films based on Stephen King stories. The segments here show a wooden Native American statue brought to life to wreak vengeance; a mysterious slime creature terrorizing teenagers by a lake; and a woman tormented by the ghost of a man she accidentally killed with her car. The Hitchhiker is the strongest of these segments, but all three capture the vintage pulp horror feel King and George Romero established in the first film.

A mirror might not sound like a particularly scary object, but director Mike Flanagan makes it a source of bewildering horror in his breakout film oculus. Karen Gillan gives an entertaining, off-kilter performance of a woman who believes a cursed mirror is to blame for the tragedy that befell her family. Determined to destroy the mirror, she and her brother are drawn back in as Flanagan thrillingly blurs the lines between past and present, between reality and dreams.

Paranormal Activity

Though it’s spawned a repetitive franchise and many pesky imitators, the original is Paranormal Activity is one of the strongest examples of found footage horror. Director Oren Peli puts a new twist on a well-known haunted house story by setting it in a prefabricated suburban home and having his main characters document their supernatural investigations.

The mythology becomes convoluted as the series progresses, but this first film explores both domestic tensions and demonic possession with equally ruthless effectiveness.

Rosemary’s baby

Mia Farrow experiences an amplified version of her fears of impending motherhood in Roman Polanski’s classic Rosemary’s baby. Pregnant young woman Rosemary (Farrow) feels isolated and alone in her New York City apartment, while her actor husband Guy (John Cassavetes) is increasingly preoccupied and distant. Polanski brilliantly builds on Rosemary’s fear and suspicion, which proves more than justified when she learns the truth about her menacingly helpful neighbors.
