Telegram is one of the most feature-packed instant messaging apps. Since its inception, Telegram’s funding has largely come out of the pocket of the service’s founder, Pavel Durov. But as the service continues to add new users and climb to new heights of success, start-ups are now looking for ways to monetize the platform. Last year, Telegram began testing sponsored messages (read ads) in public channels with over 1000 subscribers. Now the company is rolling out another monetization tool that may soon ask users to pay to unlock additional features.
Telegram recently released version 8.7.2 beta on iOS, and it introduces a new subscription plan called Telegram Premium. Membership will give users access to premium stickers and unlock special reactions. Telegram hasn’t shared further details about the new program, including its pricing and exact availability.
At the moment, Telegram Premium is exclusive to the iOS app, but it is likely to expand to Android as well once the wider rollout takes place. Android Police Note that premium stickers will not be visible to free users in conversations. Instead, they’ll see a banner asking them to “unlock additional responses by subscribing to Telegram Premium.”
Telegram’s subscription plan looks similar to Discord’s paid offering, giving users benefits like custom animated emoji, additional personalization features, and larger uploads.
As already mentioned, Telegram hasn’t fully detailed the premium plan. However, we expect to hear more about the company’s new subscription program soon. iOS users can try out Telegram v8.7.2 beta using TestFlight.
Telegram recently picked up a major update, introducing a slew of new features like custom notification sounds, custom mute durations, an auto-delete menu in profiles, and more.
