Google TV’s live content partner revealed in new leak

Google TV is about to have a major upgrade in the form of its own live content. While it’s unclear when the service will be available, new information sheds light on what types of channels will be available when it does.

Once again, 9to5Google worked its magic by dissecting a newly released APK of the Google TV app, downloaded directly from the Google Play Store. When decompiling the APK, it found a line that indicated there would be 50 entertainment channels. The line reads, “Enjoy 50 live TV channels without the need to subscribe, signup, or download.” While the 50-channel bit is important, the final nugget is that you don’t have to “subscribe, sign up, or download”, the real gem. This piece of the puzzle indicates that the upcoming service will be different from what’s available now on Google TV.

Google TV Live Service Channels

Currently, to watch content on Google TV, users must sign in and download apps for their preferred providers. Since the uncovered line indicates that no downloading or sign-up is required, we can conclude that the 50-channel offering will be completely different from what is currently on the platform. As if that wasn’t enough, the launcher points to “Google TV Channels”.

Additionally, the app description talks about the types of content that will be available at launch, with the service offering “news, sports, movies and shows.” Luckily we don’t have to guess what kind of shows there are as there is also a graphic in the app showing about 30 channels that will be available. You can check out the image above and see if you recognize one of your favorites. Again, it’s unknown when this service will go live, but current Google TV users will have to rely on supported services like Pluto TV, YouTube TV, Sling TV, and Philo for now.

What do you think about the new upcoming live channels? Does something speak to you?
